If you work in the department as a student, a trainee or a professor, you will have the opportunity to access advanced and unique tools in Québec.
You are free to contact or ask any laboratory to share those facilities for co-operation, rental or analysis.
DYNAMIQUE Dielectric Barrier Discharge

Our reactor allows to make: energetic studies of plasma polymerization and processes (PP) with atmospheric pressure, a new and unique method which give us the energy absorption by each monomer (or precursor). That parameter is important for quality control and final properties of the material from the thin film.
They are many applications, from the simple deposition to change the long-term energy surface (wettability, hydrophobicity) to more specific applications: film barriers, anti-(bio) fouling, biocompatible and thin films, biodegradable films, free-standing films .

XPS (VG ESCALAB 3 MKII)
XPS allows you to analyze surfaces with identification of chemical groups and oxidation states of solid organic and inorganic materials. Our XPS is different from those already here in Québec by integration of preparation room with deposition e-beam, heaters until 700 C and a gas entries ( (O2, N2, CO2). Those carachetirstic allow to study in-situ reactions in a clean a controlled environment.
The lab has 30 years of high-experience. Analysis and training are offered to students, researchers and industrial partners.

TOF-SIMS (TOF-SIMS IV, d’IONTOF)
We have in this department the only TOF-SIMS in Québec.
TOF-SIMS allows to detect elements and molecules on solid, organic and inorganic surfaces, with very low concentrations (ppb) and 1 nm depth. The device can combine spectral information, imaging and deep profiling to make a 3D view of elements or molecules distribution from a sample.
Then, TOF-SIMS can be used to study :
- Self-assembled monolayers
- Electronic devices
- Biological systems (such as cells or proteins)
- Catalysts
- Atmospheric or cosmic dust
- Biological markers in sedimentary rocks.
The device is easily reachable by training (to let you use it) or analysis by our experts.

Auger microscope and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) - Nanosam

NanoSAM is an exceptional device in Canada. It integrates Scanning Electron Microscopy , Scanning Acoustic Microscope (under 5 nm resolution), and an electron backscatter diffraction detectors, in Ultra-High vacuum chambers.
That present combination of modules can give an electronic image, allows to identify the present elements and the oxidation states or to observe the microstructure of a surface. The device has also a source of Ar+ which can permit the deep profiling, has heating / cooling stage, a measure system with 4 points.
NanoSAM can be used for example to identify contaminants or oxidation for the microelectronics industry; the study of polycrystalline thin films; segregation studies in metallurgy.
The device is easily reachable by training (to let you use it) or analysis by our experts.

FABULAS station : manufacturing by laser

- Custom made in collaboration with INO
- Unique device around the world
- Custom manufacturing
- Qutoations, parterships and feasibility analysis available
FABULAS offers a writing station until 1m of fiber bragg (FBG) in optic fibers, with a nanometric accuracy, between 0.8µm-2µm wavelengths. We can use Talbot interference, modulation interference, writing by phase mask technology or femtosecond laser-writing point-by-point.Furthermore, the station allows to write waveguides, to make laser cutting, or local heating by laser.
