Environment, Economy and Society

Vidéo - Pôle d’excellence en recherche : Environnement, économie et société - Polytechnique MontréalSociety is facing a major transition in energy and ecology. Researchers at Polytechnique Montréal are mobilized to address environmental issues caused by consumer habits and technological choices. The goal is to reduce their impact on society, the economy and the environment.

To build a more sustainable society, researchers are analyzing the lifecycle of goods and services to assess the impact on the health of the planet and on society’s ability to adapt. They are pondering the challenges presented by global growth and proposing innovative scientific solutions in line with the principles of the circular economy.

Through their research, researchers are developing ways to improve systems to manage the recovery of waste material, as well as optimizing manufacturing processes to allow industry to reduce its carbon footprint.

Their research is having an impact on numerous key sectors such as aeronautics, agribusiness, telecommunications, and the management of urban infrastructure.

MODELLING OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Professor: Réjean Samson
Department: Chemical Engineering

As Director General of the International Reference Center for the Life Cycle of Products, Services and Systems (CIRAIG), Professor Réjean Samson of the Chemical Engineering Department and his team are modelling the environmental, economic and social life cycle of products, processes and services to guide society through the important energy and ecological transition it must face. Among other research topics, research at the CIRAIG supports the efforts of eco-design and operationalization of the principles of circular economy.
