Today, in the presence of industrial partners and numerous guests, Robert L. Papineau, Director General of École Polytechnique de Montréal, and Professor Frank Ajersch officially opened the Thixomolding Laboratory, a new research facility located at the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Materials Institute (IMI-NRC) in Boucherville, Québec.  The research conducted in the laboratory -- the first of its kind in the world -- will focus on optimizing the manufacturing of magnesium parts for use in high-performance applications in the automobile and electronics industries.

Media representatives are invited to attend the official opening this Friday, November 4, of the Thixomolding Laboratory at the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Materials Institute (IMI) in Boucherville, Québec. Research conducted in this world-class laboratory, the first of its kind, will focus on improving the manufacturing process of magnesium parts for use in high-performance applications in the automobile and electronics industries.

Bernard Lamarre and Robert L. Papineau, respectively Chairman of the Board and Director General of École Polytechnique de Montréal, today officially opened the first "sustainable buildings" ever to be erected by an educational institution in Québec: the Claudette-MacKay-Lassonde and Pierre-Lassonde buildings. Also present at the ceremony were Honourable Jean-Marc Fournier, Québec Minister of Education, Leisure and Sport; Robert Panet-Raymond, Vice-President of the Fondation de Polytechnique; and two major donors, Pierre Lassonde and Lorne M. Trottier. From their earliest stages, the buildings set out to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Funding from General Motors of Canada, the Science and Engineering Research Canada (NSERC), the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) and École Polytechnique will provide Professor François Trochu and his team with more than $3 million over the next five years as they work to develop and help to commercializea new technologyies for moulding light-weight composite materials in high volumes and cost competitive for the automotive industry.

Robert L. Papineau, École Polytechnique de Montréal's Director General, together with Professor Pierre J. Carreau, Director of the school's Centre de recherche en plasturgie et composites (Research Centre on Polymers and Polymer Matrix Composites -- CREPEC), have officially opened the Polynov Laboratory, located in Anjou Industrial Park. Guests attending the ceremony included Pierre Reid, Québec Minister of Education; Carmen Charette, Senior Vice-President, Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI); Jean-Luc Lavergne, President, Lavergne Group; and Rick Keller, Sales/Marketing Director, Davis-Standard.
