Full Professor Ke Wu, (Department of Electrical Engineering), is the 2021 recipient of a prestigious distinction from the Engineering Institute of Canada, an association whose mission is to develop and promote continuing education in engineering.

Created in 1939 in honor of past association president Julian Cleveland Smith, the Julian C. Smith Medal is awarded annually to an engineer in recognition of their achievements and service to the development of the profession in Canada.

If the pandemic permits, Professor Ke Wu is set to receive the honor at the next Canadian Engineering Institute gala in 2022.

Of note is the fact that Professor Wu has received several impressive prizes and distinctions over the course of his career, notably, in 1999 the ACFAS Urgel-Archambault Prize; the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Outstanding Young Engineer prize in 2001; the IEEE Canada’s Reginald Métaille Audrey Fessenden in 2004; the Royal Society of Canada’s Thomas W. Eadie Medal in 2009; the Government of Quebec’s Marie-Victorin Award in 2014; the IEEE Montreal Chapter Medal for Achievement in 2015; and Polytechnique Montréal’s Award for Excellence in Research and Innovation in 2015.

Professor Wu joins a growing list of Polytechnique faculty members who have received the Engineering Institute of Canada’s Julian C. Smith Medal, as has Professor Emeritus Michel Aubertin (Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering), who received this distinction in 2017. Retired Professor Branko Ladanyi (Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering), was awarded this same medal in 2008. Going back further in time, Professor Emeritus and former Polytechnique President Roland Doré (Department of Mechanical Engineering) received the honour in 1992, as did Augustin Frigon in 1940, the first year the distinction was presented – the latter who was also Professor and Polytechnique President.

Doctoral student Hussain to receive an IEEE-MTT-S graduate scholarship

Intikhab Hussain, a doctoral student in electrical engineering, has himself been awarded a $6,000 USD scholarship from the academic organization the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S), part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (or IEEE).

The MTT-S society is dedicated to promoting the advancement of microwave theory and its applications, including radio frequency, micro-waves, millimeter waves and terahertz technologies, and brings together nearly 11,000 members from academia, industry, and government in over 190 chapters around the world.

Hussain is completing doctoral studies under Professor Wu’s supervision, and received an IEEE-MTT-S Graduate Fellowship for his work in radio frequencies, namely in the field of multifunction transceiver architectures. Hussain is also a member of the Center for Advanced Research Centre in Microwaves and Space Electronics (Poly-Grames) at Polytechnique, will use his scholarship to carry out his research activities in the field of microwave engineering.

Over the course of his doctoral studies, Hussain has received multiple awards and scholarships as part of his Polytechnique academic career. In 2019 in the European Microwave Week (EuMW)’s student challenge as part of a team with Stefan Erhardt (Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany), he earned first place for their project – a preventative medical examination system based on a contactless battery-operated blood detection implant. Also in 2019, Hussain received in a doctoral sponsorship award from the MTT-S society, which enabled him to attend international symposia on microwaves and radiofrequency integrated circuits in the United States. Also that year, he received two European Microwave Association (EuMA) travel grants in 2019, an honour he again received in 2020-2021.

Notably, Intikhab Hussain is the seventh member of the Polytechnique Montréal student community to receive a graduate scholarship from MTT-S, and he is also the third Polytechnique graduate student in the past three years to receive this scholarship. Amir Afshani, an electrical engineering doctoral student, received a scholarship in 2020, while Xiaoqiang Gu – who is now a postdoctoral researcher - received a scholarship in 2019. All three MTT-S scholarship recipients at Polytechnique were supervised by Professor Ke Wu during their studies.
