Choice of courses

The choice of courses during the integrating semester should be made in accordance with the master’s program you wish to pursue. An optimal selection of courses will allow you to transfer completed courses to your master's program in order to reduce the duration of your studies.

Integrating semester before the master’s program:

How to choose courses

In preparation for your master's degree, you will need to complete a minimum of 12 course credits (equivalent of 24 ECTS) in the Fall session following your arrival. In order to guide you in your selection of courses for the best possible start to your master’s program, each department provides a list of suggested courses by field of study. It is strongly recommended that you choose your courses from this list as they have been chosen to meet your academic needs. However, you will see that it is also possible to take other courses that are not on these lists. It is also recommended to take 6 credits of undergraduate and 6 credits of graduate studies to balance the workload.

Note that if a professor has agreed to mentor you, whether it is in the research or the professional master’s program, you should discuss your course selection. It is important to make the right choices during the integrating semester as courses for graduate degrees (serial numbers 8000 and 6000) that are completed with an A or A* in the Fall semester can be transferred to the master’s program with the approval of the professor who has agreed to supervise you. This professor will become your research supervisor (in the case of the research-based master's program) or your study advisor (for the professional master's degree).

To make the best choices, it is important to understand how the courses are identified.

How to decipher course identification codes

Each course is identified by a combination of letters and numbers with information on the type of program and the level of study. Courses offered at the undergraduate level are identified by the BA logo in the course description on the website. Identification of these courses follow a 3-letter and 4-digit code, where the first digit is between 1 and 4 (for example, MEC1410, ELE2611, IND3702, etc.). You can consult the three-year course plan to find out if a course is usually offered during the Fall, Winter or Summer term.

Courses offered at the graduate level are identified by the ES logo in the course description on the website. Courses in the 6000 series (the first digit of the course identification is 6, for example, ELE6506) have an important research component. Please be aware that you can take a maximum of 6 course credits of the 6000 series during the integrating semester. Courses in the 8000 series show the first digit to be 8, for example, IND8211. You can consult the three-year course plan to find out if a course is usually offered during the Fall, Winter or Summer term.

Suggested courses

The courses you take in your integrating semester should be relevant to the master's program you want to pursue. Make sure to decide which master’s program you are interested in before making your selection of courses.

Other courses offered

Although it is highly recommended to select courses from the list of suggested courses, you have access to the majority of courses offered in undergraduate engineering programs and graduate studies. You may choose courses in different engineering programs (for example: Civil engineering, Computer engineering), however, to prevent scheduling conflicts, it is best to choose courses within the same program that generally occur in the same session.

Undergraduate-level courses are identified by the BA logo in the course description on the website and their course identification code follows a 3-letter and 4-digit sequence, where the first digit is between 1 and 5 (for example, MEC1410, ELE2611, IND3702, etc.). Consult courses in the three-year plan to see if the course you want to take is usually offered in the Fall, Winter or Summer session.

Graduate-level courses are identified by the ES logo in the course description on the website. Courses in the 6000 series are identified by 6 as the first digit of the course identification code (for example, ELE6506). These courses have an important research component. Courses in the 8000 series have a first digit 8 (for example, IND8211 Consult courses in the three-year plan to see if the course you want to take is usually offered in the Fall, Winter or Summer session.

Language courses

You may take a language course if you wish, but it would be in addition to the minimum 12 credits. A placement test and an additional registration process is required for taking a language course at the Université de Montréal. It is therefore important for you to familiarize yourself with this process well before the start of the semester.

Non-accessible courses for the integrating semester

The courses listed in the table below are not available in the integrating semester as there is limited enrollment capacity or are reserved exclusively for regular students enrolled in a degree program.
All the courses finishing by «E», which means that are offered in english, are non-accessibles during the integration semester unless they fit in the last criterias.

No project, seminar or internship course at the undergraduate and graduate level is open to students in the Master's integrating semester. Apart from language courses, courses offered by a university other than Polytechnique Montréal cannot be taken during the Master's integrating semester, even if these courses are part of a Polytechnique Montréal program.

Steps to follow when choosing your courses for the integrating semester

Below is a summary of the steps you must take to prepare your course selection and to make up your schedule for the integrating semester:

  • Present the list of courses you wish to follow with your application. The schedule of courses is available shortly before the start of the semester, so it is possible the courses you have selected may be in conflict with other courses. It is not guaranteed that you can take all the courses you have selected. For this reason, it is advisable to prepare in advance a list of substitute courses.
  • After an examination of your file, the Registrar will confirm that your choice of courses has been accepted or will notify you of any errors requiring your attention. If applicable, you may request changes by e-mail until May 31 by e-mailing admission.echange@polymtl.ca.
  • A few weeks before the start of classes, the Registrar will contact you to explain the procedure for confirming your registration and to gain access to your schedule.
  • You will be able to modify your choice of courses online in your student file during the period provided for this purpose.

Consequences of non-compliance with the rules relating to the choice of courses for the integrating semester

Polytechnique Montréal's online course selection system gives the student a great deal of freedom to modify his or her schedule, but it is the student's responsibility to respect the rules relating to the choice of courses for the double degree. The Registrar of Polytechnique Montréal will conduct a systematic verification of course selection and may, without notice, de-register a student who has not adhered to the rules.
