Description et objectifs

(Please note that this is the English-language version of this page published in French)

This competition is a one-time initiative aimed at attracting 600 doctoral students and 400 postdoctoral researchers to Canada. Administered by the three federal research funding agencies—the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) (hereinafter referred to as the “Agency”)—this competition stems from the International Talent Attraction Strategy and related action plan announced in Budget 2025 – A Strong Canada.

Before submitting an application, please carefully read this Q&A

Disciplines concernées

The priority research areas are:

  • Advanced digital technologies (including AI, quantum, and cybersecurity)
  • Health, including biotechnology
  • Clean technology and resource value chains
  • Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic
  • Food and water security
  • Democratic and community resilience
  • Manufacturing and advanced materials
  • Defence and dual-use technologies

It is important to interpret the priority areas broadly so that relevant work across a wide range of disciplines within the purview of the three granting agencies can be considered.

If you are unsure whether your research falls within a priority area, please contact the agencies at CIRTA-BFRIC@nserc-crsng.gc.ca

Conditions d'admissibilité

N.B.: Persons who are currently enrolled as students or postdocs at Polytechnique Montréal ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for this scholarship.

The Impact+ Canada research training fellowships target doctoral students as well as postdoctoral researchers who, as the case may be, are studying or working abroad, including Canadians returning to the country who are not affiliated with any Canadian institution.

Initially, applicants will submit their application file to Polytechnique Montréal for institutional preselection. The list of required documents and the online form to be completed can be found in the “Forms and information” (Formulaires et informations) section below.

If the person is preselected by Polytechnique Montréal, the final application file must be submitted by the professor who will supervise the candidate, under the conditions stated below (see the “WHO CAN PREPARE AN APPLICATION FILE?” section).

Candidates may be of any citizenship, including Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected persons (recognized refugee status/asylum seekers), and foreign nationals who will apply for a study permit (for the doctorate) or a work permit (for the postdoc). Applicants cannot be affiliated with any Canadian institution and must be studying or working abroad. The Canadian citizens targeted by this program are those who left Canada to carry out research or gain work experience and who wish to return to the country to continue their research.

- For the doctoral fellowship: on the effective start date of the fellowship, the prospective candidate must be eligible for a doctoral program at Polytechnique Montréal.
- For the postdoctoral fellowship: on the effective start date of the fellowship, the prospective candidate must be qualified to conduct postdoctoral-level research at Polytechnique Montréal.

Warning to students wishing to submit a scholarship application:
Please note that any application will automatically be deemed ineligible if the professor who is to supervise your project does not meet the conditions set out below. It is your responsibility to confirm, before submitting your file, that your future supervisor meets all of these conditions and that he or she agrees to support your application in the event of preselection.

WHO CAN PREPARE AN APPLICATION FILE?
The author of an application file must be a professor who holds an active grant awarded under an eligible funding opportunity. For the purposes of the Impact+ Canada research training fellowships, active grants considered are those for which a payment has been made or will be made in 2025–2026 or 2026–2027, more precisely between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2027. Institutions will receive a list of the eligible funding opportunities from each agency. In accordance with the policy adopted by the host institution, the authors of application files must be qualified to supervise doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers.
