Description

The Génie en images contest ('Engineering in Images') organized by the Research and Innovation Directorate (DRI), is exclusively dedicated to images resulting from research conducted in any engineering discipline at Polytechnique Montréal.

CONTEST OBJECTIVES
  • Highlight images from research conducted at Polytechnique;
  • Stimulate interest and curiosity for scientific knowledge among the general public;
  • Contribute to the development of knowledge and new uses of scientific imaging;
  • Serve as a springboard for the contest “La preuve par l’image” organized by the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE
  • Undergraduate, Master’s, and Ph.D. students enrolled at Polytechnique;
  • Postdoctoral fellows;
  • Professors, researchers, and staff engaged in research activities at Polytechnique.

Each participant may submit only one image.

ELIGIBLE IMAGES
  • Images must have been produced as part of the participant’s research work and directly related to it;
  • Images may come from any engineering discipline;
  • Technologies used can include: natural light photography or using various radiations, optical or electronic instruments, computer-generated images, 3D modeling, drawings, diagrams, graphs, etc.;
  • Images may be enhanced or stylized, but these modifications must not alter their meaning. Colorization and graphic treatments using software such as Photoshop© are allowed to clarify or highlight the image content but must not distort it.

Information to add to your image

Each image must be submitted with the registration form and include:

  • A catchy title;
  • A presentation text (maximum 200 words) that explains the image and the research it relates to, highlights the role of the image in the research, and is aimed at an adult, curious audience, but not specialized in the research field;
  • A description of the techniques/technologies used (maximum 100 words).
SUBMISSION DEADLINE

Your image and the completed registration form must be sent electronically to Ms. Céline Roehrig no later than Thursday, March 12, 2026, at 5:00 PM.

TIMELINE
  • Contest closes: March 12, 2026
  • Selection of three finalist images by the jury: no later than March 20, 2026
  • Presentation of the images by the three finalists during the Polytechnique Student Research Congress (PolyCongRÉ): April 1st, 2026

 

First prize: $350

Second prize: $250

Third prize: $150

JURY EVALUATION CRITERIA
  • Highlighting the subject of the image (30%);
  • Cohesion between the image and the explanatory text (30%);
  • Image quality (framing, focus, composition, colorization, editing, etc.) (30%);
  • Artistic character of the image (10%).

Finalist images will be selected by a jury composed of individuals working in the research field.

  • The participant must be the author of the image and hold all rights;
  • By entering the contest, participants release Polytechnique from any liability regarding copyright infringement in Canada and any resulting disputes;
  • Polytechnique reserves the right to publish the winning images in any media or format, solely for the purpose of promoting the contest “Le génie en images”;
  • Polytechnique commits to crediting the author in every publication of the selected image.
PARTICIPANT COMMITMENT
  • By entering the contest, participants agree to comply with the contest rules;
  • Any decision by the organizers regarding any aspect of this contest, including eligibility or disqualification of entries, comments, or images, will be final and without appeal.
