Biography

My research intersects the core disciplines of mining engineering, plant, soil and forest ecology, as well as environmental chemistry. I am focused on the safe and effective reforestation, revegetation, and decontamination of both orphaned (historic) and modern tailings impoundments with an emphasis on Canadian hard rock operations. I seek solutions to the challenges of mine closure and tailings restoration by investigating the recycling and reuse of bioenergy wood waste products for natural disturbance emulation and sustainable, lasting post-mining ecosystem recovery.

I prioritize three distinct research axes related to mine tailings and stored waste rock: tree-vegetation-substrate interactions and community dynamics; ecotoxicity and nutrient cycling; and expanded application options for charcoal products at industrial sites.
