Announcement of new NSERC awards: more than $1 million for Polytechnique

On January 9, 2014, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) announced the granting of new research awards for Canadian professors and students. 

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of State (Science and Technology) announced more than $43 million in support for 77 scientific teams at universities across the country. The projects are being funded through two grants, the Strategic Network Grants and the Strategic Project Grants, administered by the NSERC.

Among the recipients, two Polytechnique professors received a Strategic Project Grant:

Ke Wu, full professor, Department of Electrical Engineering
Project: Millimetre-wave Identifications, Sensing and Tracking (MIST) for Low-Profile Integrated Services of Security and Logistics 
Grant amount: $634,503  

Raman Kashyap, full professor, Departments of Electrical Engineering and Engineering Physics
Project :
GRAPPAS: Glass Preforms Rolled and Planarized for Photonics Applications in Sandwich Structures Form
Grant amount: $373,250

About Strategic Project Grants

SPGs help address Canada's science and technology priorities. The primary goal of these grants is to increase research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada's economy, society and/or environment in the next 10 years.

This year, 75 research projects were selected from 23 Canadian universities. These institutions will receive more than a combined $35 million over the next three years:.
