Research teams led by professors Raman Kashyap and Sarah Dorner stand out in the NSERC Strategic Project Grants competition
Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology, announced that Strategic Project Grants will be awarded to support 70 research teams in universities in every region of the country. Based on partnerships with industry and government, the scientists' research projects will focus on areas of importance to Canadians, including the environment, information and communications technologies, manufacturing and natural resources and energy.
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has awarded $32.4 million over three years to 70 applicants in the 2011 Strategic Project Grant competition. The research teams led by Raman Kashyap, professor in the Department of Engineering Physics and Department of Electrical Engineering, and by Sarah Dorner, professor in the Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering, are among the recipients.
Research teams at Polytechnique Montréal
The team led by
Professor Dorner is working on the dynamics of microbial contaminants in water sources. The project aims to develop better
tools for identifying and prioritizing sources of microbiological contamination infiltrating sources of potable water. Grant
amount: $501,349
The grant
awarded to Professor Kashyap's research team will serve to finance the project NORTH-Détection hétérodyne pour le transport
des signaux radio sur fibre. This project will deal with the manufacturing and conditioning of ultra-fine ray
lasers. It will also make it possible to combine photonics and microwaves in order to provide a simple fibre-optics radio
communication system. The laser has numerous applications in spatial detection and metrology. Grant amount:
$178,000
About the NSERC Strategic Project Grants
The NSERC Strategic Project Grants help Canada reach its priority goals in the realm of science and technology. The grants principally aim to increase research and training in targeted areas that could strongly influence Canada's economy, society or environment within the next 10 years. They also aim to encourage collaboration between university researchers and industry and government partners.
Our sincerest congratulations to professors Dorner and Kashyap!
