Normand Mousseau, directeur scientifique de l’Institut de l’énergie Trottier, estime que le captage du carbone ne progressera pas suffisamment via l’industrie pétrolière et que les gains actuels restent insuffisants pour répondre aux objectifs climatiques, soulignant plutôt la nécessité de concentrer les efforts sur des secteurs comme l’acier et le ciment, tout en mettant en garde contre le risque que cette technologie serve à prolonger l’usage des énergies fossiles.
