Among many models that are currently used in theoretical ecology, the shallow lake model is one of the most interesting. The dynamics of a shallow lake are described by a non-linear model with multiple steady states and multiple domains of attraction, and is thus suitable to model the evolution of an ecosystem featuring both resilience within a domain of stability and an abrupt regime shift outside it. The picture becomes even more intriguing when we consider an optimal control problem of a shallow lake. In this talk, I will describe in detail a specific optimal control problem, present several interesting phenomena that occur within this framework, and give an outline for further research.
