The paradoxes of a sustainable energy consumption: a personal view

A paradox (from the Greek παρα, beyond, and δoξα, expectation), is a statement that, despite its correctness, cannot be accepted because it is selfcontradictory and logically unacceptable. Even if their origin is quite unclear, a comprehensive list of paradoxes has been firstly proposed by Zeno of Elea (ca. 490–430 BC): nonetheless, the use of paradox has become common in several and different fields of study, from quantum mechanics to medicine. In this presentation, I will try to list the paradoxes due to the use of both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. In most cases, these paradoxes represent problems to whom it is hard to find a reliable and sustainable solution. Nonetheless, a deep knowledge of these paradoxes is mandatory, as it is the necessary condition to apply the proper energy policies. In this way, we will be able to spot the strategies to exploit energy sources in an efficient and ethical way.'
