Resume

Sustainable development has taken a central role in the public and private agendas of nations. In this scenario, two new economic models have put pressure on integrating environmental issues into organizational strategy: the circular economy and the low-carbon economy.

Organizations have a fundamental role to play in moving towards sustainability, taking the environment into account in all their decisions and seeking a transition to more sustainable business practices. However, implementing circular and decarbonization strategies in companies and in their supply chains is not a trivial task. In this respect, the literature has suggested that Industry 4.0 digital technologies offer opportunities to turn business processes and supply chains more sustainable, as they can support different functions and processes in reducing their negative environmental and social impacts.

This short lecture will discuss some findings on the role of digital technologies in the implementation of circular and sustainable business practices, based on theoretical and empirical research conducted in Brazil.
