Abstract:

In this talk I'll provide an overview of popular machine learning techniques and their practical applications. I'll discuss applications ranging from simple classification and regression tasks, to complex structured prediction problems such as information extraction, image segmentation and entity identity resolution. I'll discuss some key technical advances over the last 20 years in terms of both modelling techniques and optimization algorithms as well as connections to classical methods associated with Artificial Intelligence. I'll examine key developments leading up to the recent explosion of interest in deep learning techniques. I'll discuss a range of real-world success stories where deep learning has had a transformative effect including, speech recognition, image recognition and machine translation.
