GERAD Seminar: The economics of Content Delivery Networks and their impact on network neutrality

Title: The economics of Content Delivery Networks and their impact on network neutrality

Speaker: Bruno Tuffin – INRIA Rennes Bretagne-Atlantique, France

Abstract:
Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have become key actors in telecommunications, permitting quality in content delivery to end users. Though, their impact on the ecosystem raises concerns about their 'neutrality'', especially in the context of the network neutrality debate, where they are often surprinsingly forgotten. During this talk, we will first remind the issues related to the network neutrality debate. We will then analyze the strategies of a revenue-maximizing CDN and its impact on other actors, namely end-users, network providers and content providers. We will compare the outputs with at 'neutral' behavior and investigate whether regulation should be introduced.

The talk is based on joint works with Patrick Maillé and Gwendal Simon.
