Housing
Before you sign the lease, always ask if the rent includes heating and electricity, or if they’re the tenant’s responsibility.
Québec’s harsh winters mean that heating bills can be high — an added burden if you’re the one whose name is on the bill.
For this reason, it’s also important to check the quality of weatherproofing and insulation, particularly around the doors and windows.
You can ask for an estimate or arrange to have your bill divided into 12 equal monthly payments by calling Hydro-Québec.
Expect to pay $35/month on average for electricity alone, and from $80 to $150/month for electricity plus heating.
You’ll also need to pay a one-time $50 account activation fee when you take possession of an apartment. The landlord is responsible for notifying Hydro-Québec when a new tenant takes the apartment.
