Before signing your lease

The lease is a legal contract that generally binds the tenant to a one-year agreement with the landlord. For this reason, it’s in your best interest to carefully read the fine print, ensuring that the landlord has put in writing everything the lease includes. For any questions, don’t hesitate to contact the Service aux étudiants (Student Services, Room C-240).

In Québec, leases can be difficult to break, and landlords are under no obligation to do so.

However, you should also know that in Québec, landlords are prohibited by law from asking for rent to be paid months in advance, or for a damage deposit.
