UNESCO Chair in Green and Sustainable Electronics

Mission

The UNESCO Chair in GSE's mission is to assess and foster transformative innovations to resolve the e-waste crisis in Sub-Saharan nations. By building on and expanding its academic network, the Chair aims at designing and developing green electronics less reliant on metals and plastics and fostering local, national, and international research capacity building. Through community engagement, the Chair will also enable safe and structured artisanal urban mining: not only to resolve the fast-paced accumulation of e-waste but also to divert from traditional (unsustainable) mining to procure the needed metals to the electronics manufacturing industry. The Chair brings together strategic expertise, such as sustainable energy conversion and storage; nanomaterials from biomass; urban mining processes; supercapacitors from spent lithium batteries; semiconducting films, and electronic devices. From the societal scope, this expertise comprises innovation ecosystem optimization, inclusive capitalism, and post-COVID-19 sustainability.
