Mission
The Lassonde Institute’s mission is to catalyze disruptive innovations in engineering by mobilizing excellence in fundamental research, technological expertise and emerging talent. It promotes interdisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration to address major societal challenges through the development of high-impact technologies, while training and inspiring the next generation of researchers, innovators and scientific leaders.
Vision and impact
Supporting the next generation to promote our technological sovereignty
Innovation catalyst in strategic research for Canada
The Institute will contribute to major advances in the information and communications technology, energy transition, life sciences, national security and other strategic sectors.
As Canada seeks to become more effective and efficient and develop key technology sectors, the Institute will focus on:
- accelerating the commercialization of disruptive new technologies
- training highly skilled talent to support industry
Through its integrated and collaborative approach, it will have a lasting impact on Canada’s innovation capacity and productivity.
People-centred and dedicated to the emergence of disruptive technologies
The Institute is structured around four components:
- An agile and accessible organization dedicated to transferring the knowledge produced by research on disruptive technologies;
- A collaborative approach that promotes access to research and prototyping infrastructure on an international scale;
- A support team specializing in disruptive technologies with expertise in monitoring, technology assessment and intellectual property development;
- A space for meetings and collaboration bringing together students, research teams, and the business and entrepreneurial communities.
Deeptech approach
First, consider the needs of society in order to optimize the creation of new products.
The deeptech approach is booming around the world. It relies on pooling complementary sources of expertise to accelerate technological development by targeting specific needs and at the same time factoring in market and production constraints.
Bringing together scientists, engineers and specialists with various types of expertise, the Lassonde Institute will act as an innovation catalyst. Conducive to interdisciplinary work, its dynamic culture of collaboration will guide the development of technologies in the fields of communications, health, national security and more. The deeptech approach is recommended as a means of encouraging the emergence of “disruptive innovations.” As the name suggests, these innovations revolutionize a field rather than providing only incremental improvements. They create new categories of products and solutions and can replace dominant technologies, thereby redefining entire industries.
Pierre Lassonde: Major donor to the Institute
Building an institute of excellence to address major societal challenges

Propelled by a $50 million donation from Pierre Lassonde, the Institute will be a source of talent and technology to boost the creativity and productivity of Canada’s high-tech ecosystem. It will build on existing strengths in the fields of semiconductors, photonics and quantum engineering.
“I don’t bet on concrete and equipment. I bet on brilliant minds who will shape our future by driving breakthroughs and creating a lasting impact for generations to come.”
