Polytechnique well represented at 27th Entretiens Jacques-Cartier
The 27th Entretiens Jacques Cartier will take place through to October 10 and will bring together some 3,000 decision-makers, scientists, politicians and businesspeople, from near and far, to take part in an international encounter.
The 27th edition will feature 30 colloquiums on social, technological, political, cultural, scientific and economic issues. This year once again, a number of professors and researchers from Polytechnique Montréal will take part in the sessions.
On October 6 and 7, Polytechnique and ÉTS are jointly holding the Colloque Défis énergétiques : la gestion des réseaux et l'électrification des transports – de la théorie à la pratique (energy challenges colloquium: network management and transport electrification from theory to practice). The two-day program presents more than 30 prestigious speakers, including Daniel Péloquin, President of Schneider Electric Canada; Philippe Schnobb, President of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM); and Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal.
The colloquium is the third in a trilogy that debuted in Lausanne in 2012, where the discussion centred on decision-making aids in complex networks, and continued in Toulouse in 2013 with the discussion of renewable home-energy management. The Montréal colloquium will deal with network load management from the perspective of integrating renewable energy sources in the aim of reducing outages and CO2 emissions.
“The topic of today's discussions has strong resonance for Polytechnique because the question of energy is a part of one of our research priorities” stated Christophe Guy, CEO of Polytechnique, in his opening message. “That priority is articulated in three parts: training highly qualified employees, researching solutions, and raising public awareness.”
Jean Choquette
The opening ceremony was held October 5 at the Parquet of the CDP Capital building, where Jacques Parizeau, former Québec Premier, was awarded an honorary doctorate from UdeM. Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) awarded an honorary doctorate to Bernard Rentier, outgoing Rector of Université de Liège. As well, Jean Choquette, Director of Strategic Planning and Government Relations at Polytechnique Montréal, was given the Centre Jacques Cartier medal. The medal is awarded to individuals who are emblematic of France-Québec co-operation or who have made a significant impact on Centre Jacques Cartier's activities. The Centre Jacques-Cartier medal was also awarded to Nathalie Bondil, Director and Chief Conservator at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts; Rémi Quirion, Québec's Chief Scientist; Robert Proulx, Rector of UQÀM; and Alan Shepard, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University.
