Michel Aubertin and Gérald J. Zagury, two full professors in the Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering, along with Professor Bruno Bussière of Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), are among the contributors to L'état du Québec 2011. Involving some 75 writers, academics and journalists, the work presents an analytical review of the issues of the day in Québec. L'état du Québec 2011 is produced by the Institut du Nouveau Monde and published by Éditions du Boréal.

"La gestion des rejets miniers au Québec," co-authored by Professors Aubertin, Zagury and Bussière, focuses on the environmental cost of mining industry growth. Mining and mineral processing produce vast quantities of solid and liquid waste that can be harmful to the environment. The authors examine the challenge of balancing mineral resource development with ecosystem protection.

They also stress the importance of working closely with mining companies, consultancies, government agencies and university researchers: "The Industrial NSERC Polytechnique-UQAT Chair in Environment and Mine-Waste Management is a good example of the synergy that has enabled the province to emerge as a leader in the development and use of innovative industrial technologies."
