Team headed by Professor Michael D. Buschmann of École Polytechnique develops solution to knee-joint problems by leading research into novel biomaterials

April 26, 2007

In 2003 Serge Savard, former star defenceman and general manager of the Montréal Canadiens hockey club, was scheduled for an operation on his left knee. Major surgery that would have involved a complete joint replacement was avoided thanks to injection of a novel biomaterial called CarGelTM, which helped regenerate the cartilage around Mr. Savard's knee. Behind this "miracle product" were the researchers on a team led by Professor Michael D. Buschmann, one of the first in the world to develop a biomaterial capable of promoting articular cartilage healing.

TOWARD A NEW ERA IN MEDICAL PRACTICE- A TEAM OF RESEARCHERS IN SPINE BIOMECHANICS LED BY ÉCOLE POLYTECHNIQUE PROFESSOR CARL-ÉRIC AUBIN IS REVOLUTIONIZING ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY

March 15, 2007

Marie-Claude Pastorel is one of the 2 to 4% of young Quebecers afflicted with idiopathic scoliosis, a condition that results in an abnormal three dimensions curvature of the spine. In Marie-Claude's case, the deformation had passed the 60-degree mark, making surgical intervention necessary. In 2000, the young woman, then 18, underwent surgery led by Dr. Hubert Labelle, orthopedic surgeon and Chief of Orthopedics at Centre hospitalier universitaire (CHU) Sainte-Justine. The operation, which lasted nearly five hours, involved affixing metal implants to Marie-Claude's spine to force it to straighten, then fusing the vertebrae with a bone graft to stabilize the spine.

Everyone has their own ideas when it comes to solving technical problems, preserving the environment or even saving the world. However, most of these ideas can be safely set aside--unless, of course, they're from the brilliant young minds competing in events like the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC)! From March 9 to 12, the 22nd edition of this extraordinary gathering, the largest of its kind in the world, will bring together 150 of the best engineering students from 22 Canadian universities. Contestants will vie for glory at the Plaza Hotel Centre-Ville and at École Polytechnique de Montréal, which is hosting the event for the first time since 1999.
