Leveraging the full potential of household waste - Inauguration of the Research Chair in Waste Recovery

Leveraging the full potential of household waste- Inauguration of the Research Chair in Waste Recovery

June 15, 2017

Montréal – Viewing waste as a resource with true economic value is the key focus of the Research Chair in Waste Recovery at Polytechnique Montréal, inaugurated today in the presence of its partners: founding partner Ville de Montréal as well as the Ville de Laval and RECYC-QUÉBEC. The aim of the researchers is to identify strategies for treating household waste that will put as much of it as possible into “recovery loops,” in order to reduce landfill and one day achieve a final waste product that will account for less than 5% of weekly garbage.

Using chitosan to combat osteoarthritis and aging cartilage - A complex sugar that can reduce inflammation

Using chitosan to combat osteoarthritis and aging cartilage- A complex sugar that can reduce inflammation

June 14, 2017

Montréal - Crustacean shells, particularly from shrimp, have held the fascination of many researchers because once transformed, they produce chitosan, a biopolymer with remarkable attributes that could make all the difference in the treatment of osteoarthritis.

A stream of superfluid light

A stream of superfluid light

June 5, 2017

Montreal - Scientists have known for centuries that light is composed of waves. The fact that light can also behave as a liquid, rippling and spiraling around obstacles like the current of a river, is a much more recent finding that is still a subject of active research. The “liquid” properties of light emerge under special circumstances, when the photons that form the light wave are able to interact with each other.

3D Printing and Nanotechnology, a Mighty Alliance to Detect Toxic Liquids

3D Printing and Nanotechnology, a Mighty Alliance to Detect Toxic Liquids

January 9, 2017

Carbon nanotubes have made headlines in scientific journals for a long time, as has 3D printing. But when both combine with the right polymer, in this case a thermoplastic, something special occurs: electrical conductivity increases and makes it possible to monitor liquids in real time. This is a huge success for Polytechnique Montréal.

Breakthrough in the quantum transfer of information between matter and light

November 10, 2016

From stationary to flying qubits at speeds never reached before…. This feat, achieved by a team from Polytechnique Montréal and France’s Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), brings us a little closer to the era when information is transmitted via quantum principles.
