Ubisoft Game Lab Competition 2015: Polytechnique Montréal makes its mark
On April 8, prizes were awarded for the Ubisoft Game Lab Competition 2015. Polytechnique Montréal was represented by two teams supervised by Olivier Gendreau, faculty lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering.
The Skwids Studio team, made up of Merry Christian Mutima, Paul Olle, Jonathan Parent and Arnaud Roussel (all from Polytechnique Montréal), in collaboration with Matthew Fernandes, Philip Figiel, Romina Rabti Zolpirani (all from Concordia University) and Alexis Girault (Université de Montréal), won the prize for Best Accessibility, along with a $2,000 bursary, for their Cheesy Journey prototype. As well, the team was nominated for four other prizes (Best Prototype, Jury's Special Prize, Best Game Design, Best Creativity and Theme Integration).
For its part, the Fearless Vikings team, made up of Nicolas Fréchette, Marc-André Gagnon, Ramy Malak, Étienne Ponton-Bouchard and Yanick Sévigny (all from Polytechnique Montréal), in collaboration with Guillaume Chouinard, Yohan Esther and Maude Fournier (all from Université de Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue), made a great showing, earning two nominations (Best Prototype, Best Challenges and Technical Innovations) for their Viking Quest prototype.
The Ubisoft Game Lab Competition took place from January 9 to March 26. “This year, especially difficult technical constraints were imposed to test the participants' limits. So I was particularly surprised by the quality of the prototypes the teams submitted after only three months of production,” said Raphaël Parent, jury chair and Project Lead Programmer with Ubisoft Montréal.
The Competition has a dual mission of encouraging and rewarding academic perseverance and foster tomorrow's video-game experts. For the competition's fifth edition, the 2015 cohort brought together 102 participants on 13 teams from 10 Québec universities. These multidisciplinary teams included students in the fields of computer engineering, graphic design, visual arts, 3D animation and more. In total, the winning teams took home $22,000 in bursaries. As well, all the participants are eligible for the 10 guaranteed internships at the Ubisoft Montréal studio. Since its first year, the Competition has drawn more than 400 students.
Ubisoft is a leading creator, publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment and services, with a rich portfolio of world-renowned brands such as Assassin's Creed, Just Dance, Rayman, Far Cry, Watch Dogs and the Tom Clancy video-game series. The teams throughout Ubisoft's worldwide network of studios and business offices are committed to delivering original and memorable gaming experiences across all popular platforms, including consoles, mobile devices, tablets and PCs. For the 2013-2014 fiscal year, Ubisoft generated sales of €1,007 million.
