Raman Kashyap, a professor in the Department of Engineering Physics and the Department of Electrical Engineering at Polytechnique, and holder of the Canada Research Chair on Future Photonics Systems, was recently appointed Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) within the Applied Sciences and Engineering Division of the Academy of Sciences.

The RSC has elected 84 new Fellows this year, including one Foreign Fellow and one Honorary Fellow. The newly elected Fellows have diverse backgrounds and disciplines. They have been elected by their peers in recognition of outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievements.

Raman Kashyap discovered the phenomenon of low-power optical damage 25 years ago. This discovery continues to significantly impact the safe operation of optical networks, optical components and high-power fibre lasers. His pioneering contributions and book on Bragg gratings have influenced the technology and application in telecommunications and photonics around the world. He holds a Canada Research Chair in Photonics and was the 2012–2014 recipient of the prestigious Killam Research Fellowship for research on laser cooling of solids.

Founded in 1882, the RSC comprises the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada. Its mission is to recognize scholarly, research and artistic excellence, to advise governments and organizations, and to promote a culture of knowledge and innovation in Canada and with other national academies around the world.

Election to the RSC is the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.

Congratulations to Professor Kashyap on this well-deserved honour!
