A new Research Chair announced today (French communiqué here) will be held by ESG UQAM’s Teodor Gabriel Crainic, Professor of Operations Research, Logistics and Transportation in the Department of Analytics, Operations and Information Technology. The Research Chair team will seek to better define, design, analyze, plan, and support the deployment of so-called “4.0” generation logistics and transportation systems.

The PSILT Chair will also investigate the balance between economic profitability and operational efficiency, and sustainable and harmonious societal development.

“I am delighted to collaborate on this project, which is on the cutting edge of research being completed in logistics and operational research. Moving goods more efficiently will not only reduce cost, but also reduce the number of vehicles on the road – which in turn makes a genuine difference in the fight against climate change,” stated Professor Gendreau.

The Polytechnique professor added, “Further, the Chair will also enable us to train a promising new generation in the field - at both Polytechnique and UQAM.”

The PSILT Chair will receive a total of $3.92 million over four years, including $1.8 million from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The Chair also relies on ClearDestination’s support, a Montréal-based company that provides integrated logistics and transport management solutions.

Multidisciplinary implications

Professor Walter Rei, (Department of Analytics, Operations and Information Technology at ESG UQÀM), will lead the Chair with Professors Crainic and Gendreau, which will also have research contributions from Professor Ygal Bendavid (also of ESG UQÀM), Professor Emma Frejinger (Université de Montréal Department of Computer Science and Operations Research), as well as three other university researchers based in Brazil, France, and Italy.

The entire PSILT Chair team belongs to the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur les réseaux d’entreprises, la logistique et le transport – CIRRELT. Polytechnique is proud to be a part of this inter-university research collaboration, and will act as host for most of the Chair’s research work.
