Professor Gilles Savard's team installs a system to increase efficiency in Canadian Armed Forces aircraft

October 7, 2005 - Source : NEWS
A research team headed by Professor Gilles Savard of the Department of Mathematical and Industrial Engineering has installed a new airlift planning system for the Air Transport Group of the Canadian Armed Forces. In place since February 2005 at 1 Canadian Air Division (1CAD) headquarters in Winnipeg, the new system, called the Dynamic Scheduling System (DSS), reduces by up to 10% the number of flight hours needed to transport Air Force materials and resources. The DSS enables the optimum assignment of aviation resources between the various bases and significantly improves supply efficiency.

The integrated multi-user system, which received funding from the NSERC, the Department of National Defence and a private company, AdOpt Technologies, is the fruit of seven years' labour. Under the scientific direction of Professor Savard, the project involved a team that included five master's and doctoral students (including Éric Rancourt, MScA, and Louis-Philippe Bigras, PhD); Lan Guex-Le, a researcher with the Groupe d'études et de recherche en analyse des décisions (Group for Research in Decision Analysis -- GÉRAD), and some 10 other analysts each year.

The project remains a going concern, since the team is presently working to add new capabilities to the existing system, with the ultimate aim of installing the system at each air force base. The system, which is scheduled for instalment over the coming months, will lead to significantly greater efficiency in the entire National Defence aircraft fleet.
