Polytechnique students were members of the winning team in the Hackfest Cyberwar
The IT security competition took place on November 2 and 3 in Québec City. The winning team included students from Polytechnique and ESET Canada, an antivirus company with offices located in the Polytechnique campus's J.A.-Bombardier building.
The team, made up of Pierre Brun-Murol and Joan Calvet of Polytechnique, Laurent Desaulnier of Desjardins, Olivier Bilodeau, Marc-Étienne Léveillé, Alexis Dorais-Joncas, Sébastien Duquette et Pierre-Marc Bureau and Jean-Ian Boutin of ESET, and François Proulx, an independent participant, were given seven hours to protect their infrastructures and attack others'. In all, 10 teams of eight participants waged battle.
Following a pharmaceutical challenge in 2010 and a merciless competition to respond to a country's call for bids for security services in 2011, this year Hackfest presented a totally new formula. The battle took place in the most hostile environment known: the Internet. Friday night, a red/blue-style game of capture-the-flag was held, with participants placed in a realistic war setting. The competition took the form of a strategy game, where nations did battle through physical and electronic military operations. The team with the most territory at the end won the game.
Congratulations to the winning team!
