New publications from Presses internationales Polytechnique

Presses internationales Polytechnique, in conjunction with Coopoly and Coop HEC, were at the Salon du livre de Montréal, November 17 to 21, 2005. Among the new titles presented by Presses internationales Polytechnique to the general public and book buyers are specialized works in applied sciences, engineering and administration.

Hydrologie; cheminements de l'eau by Jean Rousselle (a professor with the Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering), François Anctil and Nicolas Lauzon presents the latest findings in the field.

Another team, directed by professors Pierre Baptiste and François Soumis of the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering, together with Alain Haït and Vincent Giard, produced a book on goods and services production titled Gestion de production et ressources humaines, méthodes de planification dans les systèmes productifs.

In his third publication with Presses internationales Polytechnique, Professor Mario Lefebvre of the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering has written Processus stochastiques appliqués, sur les probabilités, dans le domaine de la recherche opérationnelle.

Préparer et donner un exposé by Richard Prégent and Dominique Chassé, a great success with students and anyone called upon to speak in public, is in its second edition. The accompanying CD-ROM presents situational exercises.

Among the works in progress is Agir ou périr; survivre dans la jungle de la production, by Polytechnique alumnus Joe Bichai. The work treats the implementation over a 10-year period of the Japanese practices of Kaizen and "just-in-time" production in Canada's largest shoe manufacturer.

Language and culture

More than ever, Presses internationales Polytechnique merits its name: here, the adjective international takes on its full significance with the imminent Spanish-language publication of Professor François G. Brière's translated work, Distribución de Agua Potable y Colecta de desagües y de Agua de Lluvia (in English: Drinking Water Distribution, Sewage and Rainfall Collection). What's more, thanks to an agreement with the Centre National de formation aux métiers de l'eau et de l'environnement (CNEE) in Hanoi, Professor Raymond Desjardins' Le traitement des eaux is being translated into Vietnamese.

Two new works in English are also in publication. Managing in a Sea of Uncertainty: Leadership, Learning and Resources for the High Tech Firm, by Polytechnique alumnus Denis Couillard, is an innovative take on technology management; while Asymmetric Operation of AC Power Transmission Systems: The Key to Optimizing Power System Reliability and Economics proposes a radical new approach to transporting electricity.
