New from Presses internationales Polytechnique: Probabilités, statistique et applications (Probabilités, Statistics and Applications) by Mario Lefebvre
Probabilités, statistique et applications covers the essential elements of probability and statistical theory and is an excellent choice of textbook for a wide range of courses in engineering and applied science. After providing a basic review of differential and integral calculus, the book goes on to examine the main concepts involved in probability and mathematical statistics and their theoretical applications.
In fact, the book focuses on applying these concepts rather than detailing the mathematics behind them, since one achieves a
true mastery of probability and statistics only by repeatedly working through exercises of varying types and degrees of
difficulty. A substantial portion of the book is therefore set aside for exercises; close to 600 are provided, 320 of which
include answers.
Although intended primarily for undergraduate students in engineering and applied science, Professor Lefebvre's book also
serves as a reference manual for graduate students who need a basic understanding of probabilities and statistics to
successfully conduct their research projects. As well, the last two chapters of the book, which deal with reliability and
queuing models, are particularly valuable for those studying computer science or industrial engineering.
Mario Lefebvre is a full professor in the Department of Mathematical and Industrial Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal,
where he has overseen the instruction of undergraduate courses in probability and statistics for many years and teaches
stochastic processes at the graduate level. He holds a BSc and an MSc in mathematics from Université de Montréal and a PhD in
mathematics from the University of Cambridge, England.
