Mining engineering program awards $164,000 in scholarships to undergraduate students
Bachelor's students in the mining engineering program received 58 scholarships worth a total of $164 000 on Thursday, November 22, during a ceremony attended by Gilles Savard, Dean of Research and Innovation at Polytechnique Montréal, and Richard Simon, head of the Polytechnique mining engineering program, along with representatives of the mining industry program partner companies.
Thirty-eight entrance scholarships of $3,000 were awarded to first-year bachelor's students and 20 renewable $2,500 scholarships were given to second- and third-year students. This year's was the sixth edition of the program's scholarship presentation ceremony, with the support of Agnico-Eagle Mines, ArcelorMittal Mines Canada, Barrick Gold Corporation, Rio Tinto, Semafo, The Canadian Salt Company and Xstrata Zinc.
Since 2008, to offset the shortage of mining engineers, entrance scholarships have been offered to undergraduate students in the mining engineering program. These scholarships can even be renewed annually by some eligible students.
