Awards for the best theses and dissertations

This year, three prizes were awarded for the best graduate student works: one at the doctoral level, and two at the master's level.

The evaluation committee consisted of Professors Michèle Prévost, François Guibault and Gregory S. Patience, along with Professor Jean Dansereau, Director of Graduate Studies and Supervision. The evaluation criteria used were as follows:

* Quality of scientific content (research excellence) 
* Originality
* Relevance of the work to applications of interest to engineering
* Potential impact in the area of research
* Communication of results (publications)  
* Economic benefits
* Presentation quality of the thesis or dissertation
* Academic record (GPA, duration of studies)
* Candidate's aptitude for a career in research
 
The recipients for the 2004-2005 academic year are:

DOCTORAL DISSERTATIONS
Pascal Coursol (Metallurgical Engineering) received a $2,000 award for his dissertation titled "Diagramme d'équilibre du système Ca2+, Na+//So42-, O2-, AsO43-, SbO43- par expérimentation et modélisation et ses applications dans l'affinage du cuivre." The work of Mr. Coursol, who completed his studies with a perfect score of 4.0 within the prescribed timeframe, was supervised by Professor Arthur Pelton.

Honourable mention went to the excellent doctoral dissertation submitted by Anik Chevrier (Biomedical Engineering) entitled "Application du chitosane pour la réparation de lésions du cartilage articulaire." Ms. Chevrier's work was supervised by Professors Michael Buschmann and Caroline Hoemann.

MASTER'S THESES
Dominic Bergeron (Engineering Physics) was awarded $1,000 for his thesis entitled "Méthode de calcul de fonctions de Green d'hétérostructures à une et à zéro dimension." Mr. Bergeron's work was supervised by Professors Remo A. Masut and Patrick Desjardins.

Simon Hardy (Computer Engineering) also received a $1,000 award for his thesis entitled "Modélisation et simulation de systèmes biologiques à l'aide de réseaux de Petri." Mr. Hardy's work was supervised by Professor Pierre N. Robillard.

Honourable mention went to the excellent master's thesis submitted by Guillaume Léonard (Chemical Engineering), titled "Caractérisation du mélange de poudres dans les procédés pharmaceutiques à l'aide de mesures d'effusivité." Mr. Léonard's work was supervised by Professors François Bertrand and Jamal Chaouki.

Our warmest congratulations to these new graduates, whose exceptional work will be given its due at the award ceremony in the spring of 2006, and our best wishes for a most successful career.
