The winner of an $8,500 scholarship to Polytechnique Montréal was announced last Saturday at the Génies en herbe grand finale
in Ottawa. Maximilien Vachon, the top-performing competitor in the science questions throughout the 16 episodes of the show,
received the award -- the equivalent of full tuition for a four-year undergraduate engineering degree -- from Pierre Lafleur,
Polytechnique's Director of Teaching and Training.
The Secondary 5 student at Collège Sainte-Anne in Lachine declared himself surprised but delighted with the win: "This is a big
prize. I'm very honoured, and extremely grateful to Polytechnique." Showing true leadership qualities, the young man said he
had only hoped to help his team place first. He was right on the mark: the Québec team prevailed over the rival Ontario
contingent with a final result of 760 points to 400.
