Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations

Many members of the Department of Engineering Physics are also members of  the Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations, a Network of Centers of Excellence (NCE) funded  by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Industry Canada.  CIPI’s goal is to link all researchers and partners from both public and private sectors. Therefore, CIPI stimulates innovations in photonics and promote them in order to produce wealth and improve the quality of life in Canada.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited

Atomic Energy for Canada Limited (AECL) develops technologies based on safer and more secure way of using nuclear energy.  The CANDU reactor, used in Canada since 1962, has been exported to other parts of the world since 1972.  Today, 48 CANDU reactors are in operation around the world.

A partnership between the Department of Engineering Physics (via the Nuclear Engineering Institute) and AECL has existed since the early 80’s with the creation of the nuclear analysis group.  Two large projects are running currently as a result of this collaboration: « the development of analysis methods in physics of the reactor for a more advanced CANDU reactor » and « the study of supercritical water when used in a 4th generation SCWR reactor ».

Hydro Québec

Hydro Québec is one of the largest generators of hydro-electric power in North America.  Gentilly-2, a nuclear power station of the CANDU type built in 1983, is owned and operated by Hydro-Quebec. This generating station contributes 675 MW, which is approximately 3 % of Quebec’s electrical production capacity.

The partnership between Hydro-Quebec and the department of Engineering Physics on nuclear power also began in 1981 with the creation of the nuclear analysis group. The group’s purpose is to ease the transfer of technologies between AECL and Hydro-Quebec’s Engineers.  This collaboration continued with the creation of the Hydro-Quebec Industrial Chair in Nuclear Engineering, which still supports research activities in the department.
