Remarkable student-designed inventions await you at the Polytechnique Open House!

Sunday, November 13, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the general public and media representatives are invited to
Polytechnique Montréal for a day of new experiences, exciting encounters and the chance to learn more about the fascinating
world of engineering at Polytechnique's renowned Open House Day.
PolyProject and its engineering inventions
Formed in August 2010, the new technical society PolyProject brings together about thirty students from all branches of engineering who share a common thirst for innovation. The society was founded by engineering fanatics who want to enter major competitions, and its primary goal is to design and manufacture the most promising invention from among the projects submitted by students in the aim of bringing it to market.
From its beginnings, the society's committee has made remarkable strides thanks to its very first invention, a data sensor glove made using fibre optics. Because it can precisely model a hand's movements through space in real time, the glove makes it possible to translate sign language using a smart phone. The society is in the process of acquiring a patent for the product.
Also in the aim of improving people's quality of life, the company has launched another revolutionary invention: a prosthetic eye whose pupil dilates and contracts based on ambient light. This new device offers a much more natural-looking appearance, and is a major step forward in the evolution of glass eyes!
On Sunday, November 13, the public can meet the members of PolyProject to learn more about these two ingenious inventions.
And there's more...
* Attend one of the three demonstrations of a Baja SAE racer, a single-seat all-terrain vehicle prototype that can withstand the worst race conditions, created entirely by Polytechnique engineering students.
* Play Picnic Defence, a game that promises to be fun for kids and grown-ups alike! Protect your picnic from an ant invasion using Kinect technology. A true test of your reflexes, endurance and strategy skills!
* Immortalize your visit to Polytechnique with Poly-Photo and you could win one of two $1,000 admission bursaries.
* Drop by the learning stage where you could see some explosive demonstrations! Generating plasmas and electrical arcs, blowing glass or burning CD-ROMs -- these are just a few examples of what you can do with a conventional microwave. You can also learn how lasers work and how we use them, and about a revolutionary graffiti method.
* Try your hand at being a game show contestant as you fill out a quiz! Measure your scientific aptitude with a very lively questionnaire that pits two teams against each other, with visitors paired up with Polytechnique students.
* Find out more about our 12 bachelor's programs, including our biomedical and aerospace engineering programs, which are exclusive to Polytechnique.
* Learn about our some 70 graduate-level training programs.
* Tour the research laboratories where tomorrow's technologies are being invented.
* Get information about prospective engineering careers: a placement rate higher than 98% and opportunities all over the world.
November 13 is also the day for you to find out about the programs offered at Université de Montréal and HEC Montréal, which are also opening their doors to the next generation of students.
