INVITATION 10th Annual Conference of the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society (IFESS2005)

Media representatives are invited to cover the 10th Annual Conference of the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society (IFESS2005). The world's most renowned experts in functional electrical  stimulation  will  attend  the event, to be held at Montréal's Mount Royal Centre from July 5 to 8.
June 28, 2005

A few of the astounding topics to be addressed:

  • Robots controlled by monkeys;
  • Paralyzed patients controlling a robotic arm through thought alone;
  • Blind patients seeing via tiny electrodes inserted in the brain;
  • Amputees walking with artificial legs controlled by their own nervous system...

The use of brain signals, artificial vision, cochlear implants, pacemakers and brain stimulators--the conference promises to be an extraordinary voyage into the world of "technomedicine." IFESS2005, a scientific conference organized by École Polytechnique de Montréal, in partnership with the University of Toronto and the University of Calgary, is expected to be one of the largest events ever held in the high-growth area of intelligent medical devices. A number of distinguished speakers will attend:

  • Dr. Andrew Schwartz, Professor, University of Pittsburgh
    "Useful Signals from Motor Cortex"
  • Dr. Zelma Kiss, Stereotactic & Functional Neurosurgeon, University of Calgary
    "Deep-Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Neurospasticity in the Human I"
  • Dr. Thomas Sinkjaer, Director and Professor, Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction, University of Aalborg
    "Deep-Brain Stimulation (DBS) and Neurospasticity in the Human II"
  • Dr. Milos R. Popovic, Assistant Professor, Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto, and researcher, Toronto Rehab
    "Closed-loop FES Control"
  • Dr. James D. Weiland, Director, Intraocular Retinal Prosthesis Lab at the  Doheny Retina Institute, Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, and Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering, University of Southern California.
    "Artificial Vision"
  • Dr. Philip R. Troyk, Director, Laboratory of Neuroprosthetic Research, Illinois Institute of Technology
    "Artificial Vision"
  • Dr. Mohamad Sawan, Professor of Microelectronics and holder of the Canada Research Chair on Intelligent Medical Devices at École Polytechnique de Montréal; Director of the Regroupement stratégique en microélectronique du Québec (ReSMiQ) research centre and the Polystim Neurotechnology Lab
    "FES Technologies and Techniques"
