UPDATED: May 19, 2021
To protect Canadians from COVID-19, the Canadian government has announced travel restrictions that limit incoming travel to Canada. Most foreign nationals cannot travel to Canada, even if they have a valid Visitor Visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
These restrictions prohibit the majority of non-essential (discretionary) travel to Canada.
Since March 20, 2021, exemptions to previously imposed travel restrictions have been announced for temporary foreign workers, among other groups. These individuals are now exempt from border and air travel restrictions, and will be able to enter Canada. If an individual has COVID-19 symptoms, they will not be allowed to fly to Canada. Upon arrival in Canada, an individual's health status will be verified before leaving the port of entry (i.e. where they have entered Canada). Everyone who arrives in Canada must have a feasible quarantine plan and must self-isolate for 14 days, even if they have no symptoms. (IRCC update - April 13, 2021).
Polytechnique Montréal advises you to follow the instructions announced by the government for travel outside Canada. Please consult the guidelines and information on the Government of Canada site regularly.
You can request to extend your visitor status online before your status expires. Do not go to a port of entry to submit a request directly to a Border Services Officer, as this trip is not considered essential travel.
At this time, any request for an extension or change of status must be submitted online. Requests for renewal of permits at the Canada-U.S. border are currently prohibited, given that traveling for immigration services is considered non-essential travel.
Most Service Canada offices are open, but it is best to apply online. The instructions for that process can be found here.
As part of the Government of Canada's response to support individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canadian Recovery Sickness Benefit has been established. Temporary residents are generally eligible for this benefit - provided they meet certain eligibility criteria.
Special measures to help Temporary Residents affected by the coronavirus (COVID19) have been put into place by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Polytechnique invites you to regularly take note of updates about this by consulting the IRCC website, as well as regularly consulting information and guidelines posted by visa application centers in your region (as applicable.)
UPDATED: May 19, 2021
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to accept and process your applications. However, if you are currently in the hiring process, be aware that your immigration process may be delayed, among other things because of: the reduction in staff at Polytechnique Montréal, service closures and interruptions in some Canadian visa offices, limited access to designated physicians, or limited access to local authority offices in countries of origin.
WHAT TO DO, AND INFORMATION TO CONSIDER
1. File your work permit request online
Due to the pandemic, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) advises applicants to file all work permit applications online. If, despite this recommendation, you submit your application by mail or in person at a visa application center (VAC), this may cause significant processing delays.
2. Biometric data collection
Several VACs responsible for collecting biometric data abroad are temporarily closed. For information about biometric data, please regularly check the following site: canada.ca/biometrics.
3. Approval of your application
Once your work permit application has been approved (i.e. you have received your Letter of Introduction), you can travel to Canada - if you are coming for essential reasons. Contact the individual responsible for your hiring (within the department) to inform them that your immigration application has been approved, and to confirm the essential reason for your arrival. For more details, consult the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website here.
4. Preparing for your trip to Canada
Be sure to prepare for your trip by following the Government of Canada guidelines for travel, screening, mandatory hotel stays / quarantine stays, and use of the ArriveCAN app.
5. Mandatory quarantine upon arrival in Canada
Upon arrival, anyone coming to Canada must have a feasible quarantine plan, and must self-isolate for 14 days even if they have no symptoms. IRRC indicates that those who do not have a comprehensive quarantine plan (including such elements as how they will supply themselves with food or access certain essential services), should postpone their trip.
