Research areas description

This research program will propose breakthrough acoustic technologies integrated into engines and fuselage interior panels. It is structured around four main objectives:

  • Develop a multi-scale method to design effective acoustic materials, from representative unit cells (micro) to complex systems operating in realistic environments (macro);
  • Develop phenomenological models that correlate the microstructure of unit cells with the mechanical properties of the acoustic material as measured under operational conditions;
  • Develop robust and reliable manufacturing processes and deliver fully functional prototypes; and
  • Assess the real-world impact of noise control measures on the environment.

Specialized equipment

The Chair relies on the infrastructure of the Laboratory for Vibration and Acoustic Analysis (LAVA) at Polytechnique Montréal. Our architected materials are produced using our 3D printer and foaming equipment. Acoustic characterization of samples is carried out using impedance tubes, tortuosimeters, QMA, etc. A fully anechoic room and a reverberation chamber allow the evaluation of acoustic performance on representative-sized specimens. The equipment also includes shakers, sensors and instruments necessary for vibration testing, modal analyses and fatigue studies.
