Accompanied by lecturer Olivier Gendreau, the four students, Chafik Achache, Julien Legault, Maxime Lavigne and Vincent Simard, won third place in the “Virtual Fantasy – Limited Time” student competition, which involved 30 consecutive hours of 3D modeling and programming. For the competition, each team had to create a 3D application in interactive real time on an assigned theme. Each team was also required to use its own specially assigned mystery object.

“Demos” competition – a performance that was noticed

Although the Polytechnique Montréal team did not win a prize in the “Virtual Fantasy – Demos” category, the project presented by our four students was definitely noticed! The “Demos” competition consists in displaying student projects completed throughout the year. The project presented by the Polytechnique Montréal students was called the eXe Ray. Briefly, it was the projection of a simulated medical X-ray image onto a moving surface to allow users to explore their bodies in real time.

The Laval Virtual show brought together many exhibitors from all over the world, and included a conference on virtual reality that attracted speakers from the industry and from the academic arena. 

Fun fact: at the very end of his report, the host of the French TV show Le Journal des jeux video on Canal+ used the simulator presented by Polytechnique. To see the report, which provides a good summary of Laval Virtual, click here.
