Polytechnique Montréal stands out again at Laval Virtual!
A delegation of students from Polytechnique Montréal's Department of Computer and Software Engineering took part in two student competitions at the 2014 edition of Laval Virtual: the 16th International Meeting and Conferences on Virtual Reality and Converging Technologies, held in France, from April 9 to 13.
Accompanied by faculty lecturer Olivier Gendreau, the four students – Simon Delisle, Félix Gingras Harvey, François Pierre Doray and Alexandre Vanier – took third prize in Virtual Fantasy Limited Time, a competition involving 30 consecutive hours of programming and 3D modelling. During the competition, each team had to create an interactive 3D application in real time, using a mystery object specific to each team. Directly in relation to the mystery object they drew, which was a paint roller, the Polytechnique Montréal team members charmed the jury with a game they called “Le Tombeau de Ramsès,” (Tomb of Ramses) drawing from both Oculus Rift and Kinect software.
In the Demos category, the Polytechnique Montréal team's “Air Instruments” project came in second and also received special mention from the jury for its interactive qualities. “Air Instruments” allows users to play drums, guitar and piano without physical support. Using 3D sensors and novel algorithms, the user's movements are faithfully reproduced on virtual instruments, for a complete musical immersion.
Our heartiest congratulations!
