Research project by Professor Skorobogatiy selected by the Optical Society of America

December 16, 2011 - Source : NEWS
The Canada Research Chair in Micro- and Nano-Photonics, directed by Maksim Skorobogatiy, an associate professor in the Department of Engineering Physics, was selected by the Optical Society of America (OSA) as one of the 30 most promising research departments of 2011.

In its annual special issue of Optics & Photonics News, the OSA lists the most interesting optics research topics of the year. This year, 30 articles were chosen by the newsmagazine, produced by more than 150 authors from 15 different countries. The project by Professor Skorobogatiy and his team was carefully chosen from among the entries for its innovative character. "Very few tangible results exist on this topic, because it's very difficult to guide terahertz (THz) waves over a long distance," Professor Skorobogatiy says proudly. He is working to develop optical fibres to guide THz waves. This technology is intended for eventual use in concrete applications, among others in the medical field, where it could be used, for instance, to detect cancerous cells in the brain. The study's objective is to accelerate the development of THz wave technology and its applications in a number of industrial sectors, including non-destructive surveillance of packaging, spectroscopy and tomography of non-transparent objects, and security applications.
