Université Laval awards honorary doctorate to Professor Branko Ladanyi
The Polytechnique Montréal professor emeritus was given the prestigious honour at the Fifteenth International Specialty Conference on Cold Regions Engineering in the presence of Denis Brière, Rector of Université Laval.
Branko Ladanyi is a civil engineer by training. After graduating in 1947 from Zagreb University in Croatia, he completed his doctoral studies in 1959 at Université Catholique de Louvain. He was a project management engineer in Zagreb from 1947 to 1952 and in Ghent, Belgium, from 1958 to 1962. Mr. Ladanyi taught at Zagreb University (1952-58), Université Laval (1962-67) and Polytechnique Montréal (1967-94) in the fields of Northern engineering, foundation design and rock mechanics. Since 1994, he has been a professor emeritus at Polytechnique Montréal.
During his long career as a professor, Mr. Ladanyi trained a dozen doctoral students, 20 master's students and numerous bachelor's students in civil engineering. Since 1975, he has published over 240 scientific articles, co-authored a book about the geotechnics of frozen soil, and written chapters for three other books. Professor Ladanyi was also a member, director or chair of 14 science committees and was involved in consultation work for 20 projects, among others for foundation design on permafrost. He holds American and Canadian patents on a measuring system for the rheological behaviour of geological materials called a “scarp cone.” Lastly, he is one of the founders of the Polytechnique Montréal Centre d'ingénierie nordique (Northern Engineering Centre — CINEP), which has an international reputation in the field.
The excellence of Mr. Ladanyi's research and his engagement with civil and Northern engineering have been recognized with numerous distinctions, including awards from the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Royal Society of Canada.
Our heartiest congratulations to Professor Ladanyi for this most recent honour.
