Wladimir Paskievici, Professor Emeritus at École Polytechnique, and David Rioux, an undergraduate student in engineering physics, were honoured at the 26th Annual Canadian Nuclear Society Conference, held in Toronto in June.

For his exceptional contribution to the Canadian nuclear industry, Professor Paskievici received the CNS's "Outstanding Contribution Award." Mr. Paskievici is one of the founders of Polytechnique's Institut de génie nucléaire, and is internationally recognized for his expertise in the field of nuclear safety. Over the course of his career, he has provided expert consultation to numerous organizations, including the Atomic Energy Control Board, Hydro-Québec and Environment Canada. In 2004, the CNS awarded the W.B. Lewis medal to Polytechnique Professor Michel Pettigrew of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

David Rioux, a third-year undergraduate student in engineering physics, won the best student presentation award in the undergraduate category. Mr. Rioux had received a bursary from the technical society; his project, titled "The Doppler effect in Relation to Fuel Temperature in a CANDU reactor," was carried out as part of the Research Involvement and Initiation Program (UPIR) under the supervision of researchers Guy Marleau and Élisabeth Varin. Mr. Rioux's colleague Marc-André Lajoie, another undergraduate engineering physics student, also shone at the conference.

Supa-Amornkul Savalaxs, University of New Brunswick, winner in the doctoral category; David Rioux, École Polytechnique, winner in the undergraduate category; John Luxat, professor at McMaster University and President of the Canadian Nuclear Society; Sivakumar Thangavelu, University of New Brunswick, winner in the master's category.

A member of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Nuclear Society aims to foster the exchange of information related to nuclear science and technology. This encompasses all aspects of nuclear energy, uranium, fission and other nuclear technologies such as occupational and environmental protection, medical diagnosis and treatment, the use of radioisotopes, and food preservation.

Congratulations to the winners!
