Polytechnique Montréal’s Full Professors Giuliano Antoniol and Foutse Khomh from the Department of Computer and Software Engineering, are ranked among the world’s most productive researchers, as per two criteria: number of published articles and conference proceedings in a corpus of 25 software engineering publications, and number of published articles in seven prestigious software engineering journals.

This impressive ranking results from a bibliometric study that was the subject of the article "A bibliometric assessment of software engineering themes, scholars and institutions (2013-2020)" that was recently published in The Journal of Systems and Software. The study is part of a series of bibliometric studies on software engineering over the span of 25 years.

The study was conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas (USA), Greece’s Hellenic International University and the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, and China’s Ludong University. It spans eight years (2013 to 2020) and is based on a dataset representing more than 11,500 research publications from around the world.

The authors of the paper highlight the most productive institutions and the best software engineering researchers. Researchers are divided into three categories based on their research experience: early-career, established, and experienced.

The study reveals that Professors Antoniol and Khomh are among the globe’s most productive researchers. Further, Professor Khomh is now considered to be an “established researcher” whereas in 2018 – the year of the previous study - he was considered an early-stage researcher

Number of publications (in a selection of 11 journals and 14 conference proceedings in software engineering)
Experienced researcher: Giuliano Antoniol ranked 19th in the world, and 4th rang in Canada
Established researcher: Foutse Khomh ranked 4th in the world, and 1st in Canada
Number of articles published in seven prestigious software engineering journals
Established researcher: Foutse Khomh ranked 4th in the world, and 2th in Canada with 25 articles published from 2013 to 2020

A total of 11 papers authored by Polytechnique community members have been published from 2016 to 2020 in the Journal of Systems and Software (where the bibliometric study is published) – which occupies second quartile of software engineering in 2020 with an impact factor of 2.829 (source: JCR, 2020).

Note as well that from among the 17 references cited by the authors, there are also some state of the art software engineering bibliometrics.

Congratulations to Professors Antoniol and Khomh!

Thanks to Marie Tremblay and Camille Fitch-Kutscher from Polytechnique Montréal's Louise-Lalonde-Lamarre Library for the synthesis of the study's main data. Note that the Library offers bibliometric services that are available to the Polytechnique community. https://www.polymtl/biblio
