The 17th gala for the Chapeau, les filles! competition and its Excelle Science component took place on June 10 at the Québec National Assembly, in the presence of Pierre Duchesne, Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology. Fifty-seven women from all over Québec were honoured for their choice to enter traditionally male fields.

Rébecca Beaumont, a Polytechnique Montréal mechanical engineering student from Saguenay, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship at the gala.

The Chapeau, les filles! competition seeks to encourage the diversification of career choices for young girls and women and to encourage those who go off the beaten track to persevere until they graduate. The competition, which is held in all areas of Québec, is aimed at students in high school professional training programs and college-level technical training programs. In addition to national laureates, this year there are more than 200 regional winners.

For the last 13 years, university students in the science and engineering disciplines have been able to take part in the Excelle Science component of the competition. This year, 21 future engineers, physicists and scientists received awards. Since its creation, the Excelle Science component has rewarded some 319 women, helping give a fresh face to science and technology.

Our heartiest congratulations!
