Polytechnique professors honoured by the Canadian Academy of Engineering
Professors Miguel Anjos and David Haccoun were inducted as Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) at the 2015 Annual General Meeting during the CAE's annual Symposium.
CAE President Pierre Lortie inducted two new fellows into the Academy at a ceremony held in Hamilton, Ontario, at the same time as the CAE'S 2015 Annual General Meeting and Symposium.
Professors Miguel Anjos and David Haccoun of Polytechnique Montréal were among the engineers honoured at the ceremony.
Miguel Anjos
Miguel Anjos is a professor in Polytechnique Montréal's Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Discrete Nonlinear Optimization in Engineering (ONDI) and is a member of the Groupe de recherche d'études et de recherche en analyse des décisions (Group for Research in Decision Analysis – GERAD). He is also Director of the Trottier Energy Institute, whose mission is to be the reference for energy-related decisions based on scientific data.
Professor Anjos is recognized internationally for his research in the realm of theory, algorithms and mathematical optimization applications, particularly conic, semidefinite and polynomial optimization, which is a quickly expanding field of research.
David Haccoun
David Haccoun is professor emeritus in Polytechnique Montréal's Department of Electrical Engineering. He is also a member of the Groupe de recherche en microélectronique et microsystèmes (Microelectronics and Microsystems Research Group – GR2M). Professor Haccoun is recognized for his exceptional contributions in the theory and applications of error control coding using convolutional codes and its applications to wireless communications.
Professor Haccoun has earned many honours in the course of his career. He is, among others, a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and has twice earned the Polytechnique CEO's award. He also won the IEEE's R.A. Fessenden Award in 2012 for his contribution to the field of telecommunications.
As well, Michel J. Pettigrew, Principal Research Engineer (Emeritus) at Atomic Energy of Canada's Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, and previously a professor at Polytechnique Montréal, was also inducted as a fellow of the CAE.
“We welcome the new Fellows,” said CAE President Pierre Lortie. “They are engineers of outstanding abilities. While they have widely varying backgrounds, from industry and academe and government, what they all have in common is the demonstrated desire and ability to go beyond the normal practice of engineering and contribute in exemplary ways towards their fields and to their communities.”
The CAE is the national institution through which Canada's most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on issues of critical importance to Canada.
The CAE is an independent, self-governing and non-profit organization established in 1987. Fellows of the Academy are nominated and elected by their peers, in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession. Fellows of the Academy are committed to ensuring that Canada's engineering expertise is applied to the benefit of all Canadians.
Our congratulations to the new Fellows of the Academy, and in particular to professors Anjos and Haccoun!
