The young researcher received his award during the Semaine de la PME (small and medium-sized enterprise week) and National Science and Technology Week for his thesis titled “Integrated Communication and Radar Scheme for Future Intelligent Transportation Systems.” The award comes with a $1,500 bursary.

On October 15, NSERC paid tribute to some of Canada's best young researchers for applying their cutting-edge research to concrete problems. Liang Han has designed an original wireless platform for future intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) that combines both radar sensing and wireless communication functions, and minimizes their mutual interference. This technology will play a role in ensuring road safety and managing road traffic.

Liang Han has carried out remarkable doctoral research. In addition to earning a perfect academic average of 4.0/4.0 in the courses he took, his thesis, of exceptional quality, netted him high praise from the thesis examination committee, including the external examiner, Dr. Sofiène Affes, a full professor with the Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications (Energy, Materials, Telecommunications) Research Centre at Québec's Institut National de Recherche Scientifique (INRS) and a renowned expert in this field.

The element that makes for the thesis's great strength and originality, however, is the major component of innovation, which for Mr. Liang has translated into two patents and major spinoffs in the area of new modulation techniques and low-cost radio frequency platforms for future intelligent vehicles. The quality and quantity of Mr. Liang's high-level scientific productions are also noteworthy: 11 publications in prestigious science journals over the course of his doctoral studies (including a solicited book chapter and a solicited paper as well as five papers published in the prestigious IEEE journals), in addition to eight presentations at international conferences.

The Innovation Challenge Awards honour graduate students in natural sciences or engineering who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit by identifying ways in which their research thesis results can be developed into products and processes to benefit Canadians. Since 2004, these awards have recognized and rewarded Canada's brightest minds. NSERC and a number of private-sector partners jointly fund the Innovation Challenge Awards.

Our heartiest congratulations to Liang Han!
