Frédéric Le Blanc is named Québec athlete of the week
The 20-year-old athlete from Longueuil was a crowd favourite over the three-day competition. Despite the pressure he faced at the CEPSUM pool, he had his best moment during the second day's 200-metre breaststroke. After leading the race from beginning to end, his time, 2:10.09, earned him the top step on the podium, ahead of Jason Block of the University of Calgary Dinos, who has won eight of the last nine breaststroke competitions at the SIC championships since 2010. Also, Frédéric's time set a record for both the Carabins and the RSEQ.

“It's truly magic,” Frédéric said a few moments after the gold medal was placed around his neck. “I wasn't
expecting this to be so big, and I didn't think I could be this nervous,” he added, referring to the moments right before
the competition.
The last gold medal won at these championships by a member of the Carabins men's team was in 2005, when Sébastien Poulin won
the 200- metre breaststroke competition at the University of Alberta. Frédéric is also the first male “Bleus”
(Carabins) athlete to win a CIS gold medal at Université de Montréal.
A day earlier, the civil engineering student earned silver in the 100-metre breaststroke with a time of 1:00.64. Again, he set
a new record for the team and for the RSEQ.
On the last day of the meet, the second-year swimmer continued to draw energy from the crowd to place second in the 200-metre medley with a time of 2:01.40, yet another new team record.
Bravo Frédéric!
Bronze for Marc-André Ruel
Another Polytechnique Montréal student, Marc-André Ruel (computer engineering), won a bronze medal in the 200-metre butterfly,
his first medal at the CIS championships.
Thanks to the performances by Frédéric and Marc-André, the Carabins men's team, with only four swimmers, jumped to 10th in the
general standing.
Our heartiest congratulations to the swimmers!
