Écologez integrated building design competition: three Polytechnique Montréal students on winning teams

Three Polytechnique students were part of the two winning teams of the Écologez integrated building design competition.

Mechanical engineering student Keven Durand and civil engineering student Jérémy Daugreilh were part of Team No. 3, while Olivier Charbonneau-Charette, a student in the chemical engineering program, was a member of Team No. 5. They and their teammates brilliantly tackled the challenge of designing 200 housing units for a reclaimed site in the Saint-Raymond neighbourhood of Montréal's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district.

The two winning teams shared the grand prize of $6,000. One of the winning proposals was lauded for its human-scale dwellings, its daylight-maximizing layout and its distribution of private and public space. The other, deemed to best respond to the client's expectations, was commended for its efforts to harmonize with the neighbourhood.

Besides designing more energy-efficient buildings, the teams were required to incorporate such features as pleasant outdoor spaces, superior soundproofing and sufficient storage.

Organized by Équiterre and École de technologie supérieure (ETS), Écologez 2011 brought together some 60 future building and environmental professionals who, working in multidisciplinary teams, addressed social integration concerns in a green- building perspective.

Congratulations to the winning teams!
